The Brave Little Parrot - Rafe Martin

Literal Comprehension

This story has been excerpted from Buddhist legend, by Rafe Martin. It focuses on the strong determination of the little parrot to extinguish the forest fire and to save lives of many creatures.

When the forest catches fire, many animals run hither and thither for the sake of saving their lives. Then a little parrot, often considered as an incarnation of Lord Buddha, shouted out loud and moves towards the river for an idea of saving animals comes in his mind. He dipped himself in the water and flies back over the raging fire. He shakes his wings that releases the few drops of water, producing a sound, hiss. He continues this many times that makes him physically weak. While, the gods are enjoying in their places having delicious foods and mocking at the parrot. But one of those gods feels pity on him and turns himself as an eagle for the sake of saving parrot. He advises parrot to fly to safer place, while the parrot insisted eagle to let him to his job. Seeing the bravery of the parrot, the eagle grows ashamed and wants to be like that brave little parrot. So, he exclaims his feelings and begins to weep, which turns to a heavy rain causing the vanishment of the forest flames. All animals including parrot becomes whole and well. Everyone becomes happy seeing the courage of the little parrot.

Interpretation :

The story tells us that the effects of strong determination is always positive and beneficial for everyone. Willpower to do something will surely lead us to our goal. Kindness is shown to be contagious, that flows from parrot to the eagle and to whole creatures. It shows that when we live luxurious life, we forget others' sorrows and mock at them, instead of helping.

Critical thinking :

The theme of the story is really good. However, there are some parts that do not satisfy my mind. I wonder how that short parrot thinks about extinguishing whole forest though he does not have huge resources to support him. It is mentioned that gods live in palace above the sky. It is practically impossible to build a house in air? It is not sure that god exists, but in fact god in our belief. How can someone turn himself into an eagle and how can some ones' tears turn into a heavy rain that could extinguish forest flames? It is said that the forest is destroyed by the fire. Then there is no point in having the forest in the previous state i.e. as beautiful as before.

Assimilation :

Before reading the story, I didn't use to focus on my work if it becomes difficult. Now I have learnt to go on my work no matter how hard it is.
