Discuss 'The Lunatic' as a political protest poem:

Literature has been used as an influence to the political condition of our society for centuries. Writers use their skills to express their approval or protests to certain political situations through their art. Similarly, the lunatic is also a rebellious (control) political protest expressed by the poet towards the cruel and merciless Ranarchy and the ruling class ugly exploitations of the common people.

This poem shows Devkota's rebellion and political interest towards the contemporary political system at that time. He has to wear the mask of a mad man just to express his true emotions regarding the control of the Rana's on innocent common people. He expresses his anger towards the leaders who exploit and deprive common people of their rights and freedom, The way that these selfish and cruel rulers feed lies to innocent people in the pretext of their welfare boils his blood. Mockery of democracy, extent of human degeneration in the name of upholding new values ruthless exploitation of people's right and the economic plunder at that time influenced the writer to write this poem and express his dissatisfaction by calling himself a lunatic to secure him from the rulers.

The poet also expresses that he consider political leaders and prostitutes to be same as both of them can easily be bought by money. He has no respect for kings and emperors and Nawabs who drink the blood of poor people for their amusement. He explains how society is being led by blind. Specially during the 1950's i.e. during the transitional phase of Nepali politics from Rana's dictatorship to democracy, Rana's atrocity reached its peak and innocent people were brutally killed and punished. This angered the poet immensely for which he wrote the poem 'the lunatic' expressing his anger revolt and protests towards these merciless and blood sucking rulers (Rana Rulers) at that time. Hence, the lunatic is a political protest poem.
