Her First Ball Summary BBS 2nd Year

Katherine Mansfield is New Zealand based author who was born in 1888 and expired on 1923. She was a writer, essayist and journalist by profession. Her works are celebrated across the world which also have been published in 25 languages. She is considered as one of the most influential and important authors of the modern world.

'Her first ball' is a short story whose author is Katherine Mansfield. This story is published in a magazine named 'the sphere magazine'. In this story there is a country girl named Leila who has come to the city to attain the dance party which is organized in the city. This is Leila first visit to dance hall for a ball. Along with Leila her cousin also had gone tot he dance. To go at the dance hall is very overwhelming excitement for Leila because of her first time.

Because of the excitement she has, she imagines that her dance partner is in the cab with her, she thinks that the bolster in which she is resting her head on, is the hand of her partner while heading towards the ball. Her cousin Sheridan thinks that there will be strange experience in the ball because Leila has never been to the ball. But Leila on the other hand is too much excited to visit the ball because of her first time. Back in the day when Leila used to go to school she had learned to dance, but she has no knowledge about ball.

After a little ride, they reach to the hall where the ball is held. The moment they reached in the hall, dance was about to commence. The hall in which dance was about to start was decorated properly, with different lights and colors where huge numbers of couples were present in order to dance. After arriving in the hall, her cousin sister Sheridan escorts her to ladies ladies room where many women where changing their travelled cloths to dance cloths in order to dance. Finally after wearing their dance outfit they were ready to go to dance hall. When they reached to drilled hall (place where danced), the dance had not started.

Looking at the crowded hall and the noise Leila was amazed by seeing such a sight and she felt glad that she went to the dance. The wonderful hall well decorated place, Seeing many beautiful couples Leila was too much excited. 'Meg' who is cousin of Leila introduces her to the people at the dance by saying she is my little country cousin. By this we can see 'Meg' is trying to make her more nervous. Even though Leila has worn beautiful dress which doesn't seem to look like country girl, Meg tries to tease Leila by saying country girl.

Then a man approaches towards Leila and by moving forth his hands he asks Leila to dance with him. Leila happily accepted to dance with him and went to the dance floor. The man ask her, have you been here the previous week? Then Leila said, this is my first ball dance. I've never been to ball before. By hearing this the man was surprised. Soon the music stopped and they parted along their way. Then after some time the music began to play again. Then her another partner ask her to dance same way the first one had asked.

In the course of dancing, the man asked her the same question, have you been here the previous week? Then she replied the same. After that they both went to supper room in order to have ice. After having supper they were returning to the dance hall where she saw the same fat man she had danced before who was waiting for Leila. When they were dancing the old man had revealed that he had been attaining the ball dance for 30 years which is 12 years before Leila was born. 

During the dance, the old man had said, one day you will be old, then no one will like to dance with you, no one will welcome you. One day you will be mother of this hall, then you will be fat and you will be talking to other elderly women about the men. You will talk about how other men will kiss your daughter in front of you, by seeing this you will be sad because no one will kiss you at that time. During this conversation, very sad music was playing in the hall. Leila becomes sad because of  all the things said by old man and the addition of the sad music, which was best combination to ruin Leila mood.

Then Leila becomes upset and then she went to side of a wall. She was so upset, she did not liked to dance anymore. By seeing this old man says, I just said such things as a joke but Leila was not convinced. After sometime the music changes again from sad to romantic. Then a boy with curly hair asks her to dance with him by bowing down. She could not ignore such a handsome boy and went to dance with him. Bu dancing with him, Leila mood swinged from sad to happy. She was so happy that she could see the pink faces, the velvet chairs become one beautiful flying wheel. She could feel the magic of ball. During the course of dance she collided with the fat man whom she did not recognize at all because she was deeply into the magic of the ball.
