Jest and earnest summary in English :

In the essay jest and earnest she describes about the surrounding she is seeing in front of her eyes during the time of summer season. Annie Dillard starts her essay with the frogs which were hopping in the water and their invisible position. Among many frogs there she notices that one frog is sitting still with half body submerged in water.

The frogs would hide in to the water and then jumps to Dillard feet and then again splash into the water. Other people seeing the splash gets terrified but for Dillard it became an amusement activity. She then goes near the frog which was still in the water. But after sometime she notices the changes in that frog. When she gets closer, the frog begins to shrink in to the water like a deflating football. The shrinking of the frog into the water is no more than a giant water bug eating it.

In the essay, Dillard describes the way of eating of other animals. Before the frog was eaten by water bug, the frog also had eaten an insect (fly) by catching its prey using sticky tongue of theirs. She describes that the carnivores animals like lion, tiger eats their prey alive. One of the most common way of defeating the prey for animals was by grasping the prey from bottom so that they cannot run away and can be eaten easily by the attacker. But the way of eating for frog is completely different form other animals.

She  then is compelled to think how God made the creation of such creatures. Shen then talks about Koran for animal creation. In Koran (the holly book of Muslims), Allah asks, the heaven and earth were created in Jest and is surprised and confused weather animals were created in Jest or earnest.

Writer then drags readers attention towards Pascal and Einstein. She describes about the Latin term 'Deus Absconditus' (hidden God) use by Pascal. Pascal who is one of the greatest physicist, apologist and a writer. According to him we cannot see god with our naked eyes, he's hidden. Similarly Einstein also describes God as subtle (difficult to analyze or describe) but not malicious (intend to do harm / harmful ). According to Einstein, God is metaphor for nature and natural order. Einstein thinks that god is helpful rather than being evil. i.e. gods hides in nature and protect the weak.
